Starting a Home Daycare
Starting
a home daycare is an exciting idea. Many
people who do this are especially happy about
the fact that it means they’ll be making
money to stay home and care for their own kids.
And starting a home daycare can be a wonderful
and rewarding experience. But it’s certainly
not easy. You’ll need to think about a lot
of different factors before you start a daycare
in your home.
Some
of the questions that you’ll want to ask
yourself before starting a home daycare
include:
- What age children will I
want to take care of?
- How many children can I care
for in my home daycare? (Look at both the practicalities
of your home and the legalities in your state.)
- Will I need to hire help
for my home daycare? If so, how many people will
I hire? How will I hire them? What qualifications
will I require?
- During what hours of the
day will I run my home daycare? How will my life
be affected if parents are late to pick their
children up?
- Who will my clients be? Where
and how will I advertise that I’ve started
a home daycare?
- Will there be any educational
activities at my home daycare? Will I offer preschool
lessons and projects? If so, what materials do
I need?
- What kind of arrangements
will need to be made for sleeping and eating at
my home?
- What are all of the things
that I will need to do to get my home up to code
for a home daycare? Will I need to put up baby
fences in the house? Will I need to cover the
outlets? If I have a pool, what will I need to
do to keep it safe for children?
- What will my rates be for
my clients?
- What types of business things
do I need to learn before starting a home daycare?
Will I need bookkeeping software or assistance
with taxes? What will this cost?
It’s tempting
to just jump right in and start your home-based
daycare business. However, you want to
make sure that you’ve covered everything that
needs to be covered before you begin because it
will save you a lot of trouble down the line. It’s
a good idea to get a simple book about creating
a business plan and make one for
your home-based daycare so that you know what your
goals and plans are for starting your daycare.
Finally, make sure
that you have complied with all of the state rules
about starting a home daycare. You will need to
file an application with your start for starting
this business and you will need to meet basic childcare
requirements like taking a CPR class and having
your fingerprints documented. Starting a
home-based daycare can be a lot of work
in the first few months as you get all of these
things taken care of and get ready to get business.
But once you’ve gotten set up and you’re
running your home-based daycare, you’ll probably
be pleased with the rewards that it brings to your
home.
